Story
a grade ii listed ale house retains it’s heritage following extensive, sympathic restorations.
The history of the Viper pub, dates back to the mid-19th century when it was originally a pair of cottages. It became a licensed "Beer House" around 1874 and was officially named the Viper Inn by 1889.
The pub was part of the Trumans Brewery estate in the early 20th century, with two families managing it from 1917 to 1990: the Halls and the Beards. Today, it remains a pub and is included in the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) National Inventory of Public House Interiors.
When the current owner took over the building in 2019, it was in a poor state, needing significant investment and a complete refurbishment. By this time The Viper had become a grade 2 listed structure. For three years, the landlord worked away at the pub, investing a significant amount of money to rebuild it, whilst retaining the buildings unique character.
In November 2022, the pub reopened as a traditional ale pub, serving food seven days a week. Locals and visitors from far were delighted to see that the pub had been renovated to a high standard and in keeping with in the character of this isolated unspoilt Grade II listed country pub.
